WHAT’S ON THE YDI?
This document provides you with an overview of all the topics covered on the YDI.
Participating schools can email us at ydi@sfu.ca to request a link to review the survey.
TIMELINE FOR SURVEY IMPLEMENTATION
At least 4 Weeks Prior to Survey Implementation
SEND HOME PARENTAL/GUARDIAN CONSENT FORMS to grade 11 students AND cc THE YDI TEAM ON THE EMAIL
You can download parental/guardian consent forms in English and 9 other languages here.
Parents/guardians must have at least four weeks to review and return passive consent forms if they do not want their child to participate in accordance with the UBC Research Ethics Board. Schools cannot administer the YDI without meeting this requirement. Parents/guardians provide passive consent and only return consent forms if they do NOT want their child to participate. They can also withdraw consent by emailing the school or emailing us at ydi@sfu.ca. Grade 11 students are invited to participate. In some instances, Grade 10 and 12 students may be invited with permission of the YDI research team, for example in schools with small Grade 11 populations.
Please advise the YDI research team of any students who have not received parental/guardian consent so we can remove their names from our records.
At least 1 Week Prior to Survey Implementation
1. BOOK COMPUTER LAB/DEVICES
The survey takes place online. Students may also use their own devices if in accordance with school policy.
2. READ ADMINISTRATION PACKAGE
3. SHOW YOUTH ADVISORY COUNCIL ABOUT THE YDI VIDEO TO PARTICIPATING STUDENTS
Our Youth Advisory Council created this video to share why they think the YDI is important. If possible, please show the video to participating students at least one week in advance.
4. PRINT OUT STUDENT PERSONAL EDUCATION NUMBERS
Students who receive parental/guardian consent and who choose to take part In the survey will log in using their PEN (Personal Education Number).
! IMPORTANT: Please ensure students know their PEN and DO NOT use their school student ID to sign into the survey
5. PRINT OUT MORE ABOUT THE YDI SLIPS
You can find these slips In your Administration Package, or download below. Each student will need one of these double-sided slips on YDI Survey day. This provides them with information should they want to withdraw their data or have questions or complaints for the Research Ethics Board. The slip also has some resources for students if they need extra mental health or social supports.
5. CHECK THE SURVEY LINK
Double check that the survey link works within your school. You may need to connect with your school or district IT if the survey link is not working. Participating schools can request the survey link from: ydi@sfu.ca
Optional Activities Prior to Survey Implementation
6. GO THROUGH THE SURVEY
We strongly recommend viewing the survey questions in advance. You can log in using PEN: 999999999 and birthdate 2005, 01, 01, and your school or district name. Please do not click responses as you review.
7. SHARE SURVEY AND SURVEY DATE WITH SCHOOL COUNSELLORS
We recommend that school counsellors review the survey in advance and that you advise them of the survey date in case students need support.
8. USE PREVIOUS REPORTS AND/OR INFOGRAPHICS IN CLASS ACTIVITIES to PROMOTE CORE PERSONAL, SOCIAL, AND COMMUNICATION COMPETENCIES
YDI survey participation aligns with BC curriculum core Personal and Social competencies. Discussing YDI topics in class provides an opportunity to promote Thinking and Communication competencies as well. YDI topics align with many course topics. You can also use reports and infographics to discuss school-related topics such as understanding statistics (mathematics), making hypotheses (science), and creating student-centred action plans to mobilize YDI findings. Having students engage with YDI data before they complete the survey may help them understand the value of the survey.
On Survey Day
Set aside 60 minutes for preparation and survey completion. The survey takes approximately 40 minutes to complete.
9. PREPARE A QUIET ACTIVITY FOR STUDENTS NOT PARTICIPATING IN THE SURVEY AND FOR THOSE WHO FINISH EARLY
The activity should be completed without moving around the room or speaking to others.
! Tip Don’t make the quiet activity too enticing (like providing extra time to work on an assignment). This might deter students from completing the survey and may be unfair to students who decide to take part in the YDI.
10. CHECK FOR ANY PARENTAL/GUARDIAN WITHDRAWALS
Please connect with these students privately to let them know that their parent/guardian has not provided consent to participate. Students who do not receive consent cannot take the survey.
11. distribute “more about the YDI slips” and ensure that students know their pen for survey login
! IMPORTANT: Please ensure students know their PEN and DO NOT use their school student ID to sign into the survey
12. READ THE FOLLOWING ASSENT SCRIPT
This script is in your administration package. You can also download here to print out.
AFTER THE SURVEY
Please collect any student PENs if you provided paper slips and dispose of them securely (shred them).
contact us at ydi@sfu.ca to let us know the survey is complete
School reports will be available in May. We encourage you to share the results with your students in class discussion activities. See training slides below for examples.
